Water leaks are often invisible - and sometimes even silent. A dripping leak produces no audible noise, but larger leaks give themselves away through typical noises in the water. Sound travels further in water than in pipe material or air. The lower the frequency, the further the signal (the sound) travels. High frequencies quickly lose energy, only the low frequencies can reach the measuring point over long distances.
Hydrophones are highly sensitive microphones that are specially designed for low frequencies, even below the limit of human audibility. They are connected to hydrants or house connections and measure directly in the water.
Important areas of application:
- Correlation on plastic pipes - Classic structure-borne sound microphones are often less successful here.
- Large transport lines - Ideal for large diameters where other methods reach their limits.
- Long measuring distances - Hydrophones enable correlations over long distances.
As an accessory for our SeCorrPhon AC 200 and SeCorr C 200 correlators, the HY 200 hydrophones have been developed precisely for these areas of application: they reliably detect low frequencies and thus enable leak detection - especially on plastic pipes and long transport lines.
With hydrophones, you can track down leaks - especially where other methods reach their limits. In our video, we show you how easy it is to install an HY 200 in an underground hydrant. Take a look and see for yourself how you can be up and running in just a few simple steps!
